What is the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP)?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is an evidence-based listening therapy aimed at diminishing sound sensitivities and enhancing auditory processing, behavioural state regulation, and social engagement behaviours through the use of filtered music.
Suitable for children and adults, the SSP has demonstrated benefits for individuals with trauma, anxiety, sensory processing differences and more.
The SSP is an innovative auditory program created by Dr. Stephen Porges, an internationally renowned neuroscientist, trauma researcher and creator of the Polyvagal Theory.
How SSP works
The SSP serves as a non-invasive, acoustic vagal nerve stimulator, assisting in recalibrating the nervous system to better support connection, cooperation, and resilience.
The music of the SSP has been specially filtered to highlight frequencies of sound that typically make us feel safe.
Vagus nerve stimulation is an easy and effective way to build resilience to stress and feel great.
It achieves this by helping your body shift from a sympathetic state (fight, flight, freeze) back to a parasympathetic state (rest, digest, restore).
Think of your vagus nerve as your body’s neurochemical “superhighway,” carrying signals between the brain and your vital organs.
Stimulating the vagus nerve activates your parasympathetic nervous system, helping you produce natural “feel-good chemicals,” including:
-
Endorphins
-
Dopamine
-
Serotonin
-
Oxytocin
-
Nitric oxide
-
The anti-inflammatory neurotransmitter acetylcholine
During the SSP, individuals listen to specially filtered music through headphones, either in-person or remotely, under the guidance of a provider.

SSP is Backed by Decades of Research
The SSP has helped over 100,000 children, adolescents and adults in more than 70
countries worldwide.
The SSP’s effectiveness has been proven in a wide range of clinical studies, including clinical trials involving children and adults with autism.
Real-world evidence has also shown significant improvements in the following areas after the SSP:
-
61% of clients with anxiety symptoms moved from clinical to non-clinical level
-
54% of clients with depression symptoms moved from clinical to non-clinical level
-
63% of clients with trauma-related symptoms moved from clinical to non-clinical level
What to expect from your SSP experience?
Listen from almost anywhere
You can listen to the music of SSP remotely from the comfort of your own home or other safe place, allowing for flexibility and ease. I will collaborate with you on a listening plan that works for you.
Your Role
As the listener, all that is required of you during a session is to simply listen to the music and to let me know of feelings or sensations, whether emotional or physical, that may arise.
As your provider, I may also have you engage in light activity during your listening sessions, such as stretches, breathing exercises, or drawing.
My role as your SSP provider
As a certified provider, I will be your guide along your SSP journey. I am trained to make sure that you are ready even before you start listening to the music, and will recommend an individualized listening plan for you. I will provide education, answer all your questions and prepare you for all that you may experience once you begin.
During the listening, I will monitor your progress and make sure you are not completing the program too quickly or too slowly. I will support and work with you to find the right pace and conditions for the optimal listening experience for you.
If you are a parent or caregiver, you may be the primary listening partner for your child and I will provide instructions for what activities to do and how to guide your child.
SSP Structure
SSP Connect
SSP Connect offers a slower way to approach SSP, allowing time to adjust and acclimate to the listening in preparation for SSP Core.
It is an unfiltered version of the same underlying 5-hour playlist as SSP Core, used as a way of creating familiarity and expectancy for SSP Core.
SSP Core
SSP Core is a 5-hour long filtered music program and potentially most impactful of the three pathways. It is the primary acoustic intervention and it can be broken down into smaller segments. It will be structured based upon careful collaboration that considers each patient’s unique needs.
SSP Balance
SSP Balance offers an integrated experience, extending the state-regulating benefits beyond the five hours of SSP Core.
It includes the same underlying 5-hour adult playlist as SSP Core but with a lighter frequency modulation algorithm. SSP Balance supports continued practice of the neural networks associated with listening for further toning. Many find it calming and grounding, using it as a daily state shifter and support.
Developed as a follow-up to SSP Core, SSP Balance provides an opportunity to return to music as a calming and grounding experience with a less intensive neural workout.
All parts of SSP can be delivered with speakers or over the ear headphones.
Intake Process for Adults
During our initial intake session, we'll delve into the specifics of why you're seeking assistance and what outcomes you hope to achieve. I'll inquire about your history, exploring how your nervous system reacts to stressors and cues of safety.
Topics may include sound and sensory sensitivities, past trauma, current medical treatments, and involvement in psychotherapy. We'll also address associated symptoms such as chronic pain or digestive issues, as well as discuss both supportive and challenging relationships.
You'll also be asked to complete an intake form and possibly some additional pre-listening assessments if we determine they would be beneficial. Post-listening assessments will also be utilized to monitor progress.
Beginning the SSP
During your first listening session, I'll guide you on how to use the client dashboard and help determine the appropriate volume setting. We'll also explore self-regulation strategies that may support you throughout the program, and I may introduce additional strategies to aid in the SSP process.
We'll start with a one-minute listening session and then discuss your experience. Depending on your comfort level, we may gradually increase the listening duration to 5 or 6 minutes.
After the initial session, I'll ask for your feedback within 24 hours to tailor the plan for the next session, including the duration and intervals between sessions. We'll continue this communication after subsequent sessions, adjusting as needed to ensure a manageable pace.
While sessions may lengthen and become more frequent over time, we'll work together to personalize the approach and maintain ongoing contact throughout the protocol.
Additional Points to Consider
-
This intervention may lower defence mechanisms, potentially making you feel more vulnerable during or after sessions, leading to increased anxiety. Seeking support from trusted individuals can be beneficial. Informing close contacts about your use of the protocol can help them understand and provide appropriate support.
-
Some individuals experience no negative reactions and simply enjoy the music during sessions.
-
Incorporating exercise and physical activity between sessions can aid in integrating the SSP and enhancing self-regulation.
-
While some may notice improvements quickly, others may see results up to 6-8 weeks after completing the intervention.
Intake Process for Children
To facilitate the SSP for children, I'll schedule an initial appointment with parents/caretakers. During this session, my aim is to understand your child's experiences and how we envision the SSP aiding them. I'll inquire about your child's nervous system tendencies and how they may interact with their environment and others.
Together, we'll devise a plan for their first listening session. We'll discuss setting the appropriate volume, determining the session's length, and I'll provide guidance on how to support them as a co-regulator throughout the process.
After their initial experience with the music, I'll request parents to provide feedback within 24 hours regarding any observations. Based on this feedback, we'll tailor the plan for the next session, including the duration and intervals between sessions. We'll continue to communicate after subsequent sessions to refine the plan. Once we establish a manageable pace, we may establish a regular ongoing schedule, with the understanding that we'll remain vigilant for signs of nervous system regulation or dysregulation that may require adjustments.
Additional Considerations
-
The SSP acts as a gateway to the Social Engagement System, potentially leading to significant changes in how your child interacts with the world. However, these changes may be fragile and require recognition and response with attunement to solidify and extend the gains.
-
Consistent co-regulating responses from those around your child can enhance their sense of safety and reinforce newfound behavioral and emotional gains.
-
Your child may exhibit increased eye contact and receptivity to social behavior, reflecting a greater sense of safety. Reciprocal interactions, such as eye contact and smiles, may become easier and reinforce their innate drive for social connection.
-
While benefits may manifest early, some may not be observable until up to 6 weeks after completing the Core SSP.
